Commission information
Portrait paintings and drawings are based on direct observation and from commissioned photography. My intention is to capture the spirit and individuality of the sitter.
The sitter can be painted in my studio in Kent or in their own home, providing they have space and light. After an initial consultation, a sitting of two hours are required for the purpose of sketching and photography. If the sitting is taken wholly from life 4 to 6 sittings of 2 to 4 hours are required. Smaller pictures may require less time and larger more.
I have found that the best results for children’s portraiture comes from one sitting of a couple of hours where sketches and composition can be explored and photographs taken for reference, whereupon I complete the portrait in my studio.
For drawings, I work directly from the sitter – a life size head portrait would take five hours to complete. A drawing may be also be taken from photographic reference (that I will commission) which would require a sitting of one hour.
